about Khotan Rugs:
East Turkestan Khotan rugs are renowned for their unique designs that blend Chinese details with Asian motifs, including medallions, pomegranates, and Buddhist elements, as well as Persian and Indian influences. These rugs originate from the Xinjiang region in northwest China, particularly from the cities of Kashgar, Yarkand, and Khotan, which were significant trading centers along the Silk Road
The colors of Khotan rugs are typically softer, featuring hues like soft yellow, rust red, and various shades of blue. The designs often incorporate geometric patterns and abstract drawings, with a color palette that ranges from rich colors to soft pastels2. The rugs are known for their elongated shapes, with the length usually being nearly twice that of the width
Khotan rugs are crafted using an asymmetrical knotting system with a medium-low density of knots. The foundation is usually made of cotton, while the pile can be wool or silk, sometimes with metallic threads woven in. The pile is generally trimmed to a medium-low height to create a distinctive finish
These rugs are not only a testament to the craftsmanship of the weavers but also a reflection of the cultural exchanges that occurred along the Silk Road, making them a valuable piece of art and history
